SoC faculty and students active at National College Media Convention

SoC faculty and students were active at the College Media Association’s National College Media Convention last week in Louisville, KY.
 
APR student Rachel Syrba, who serves as general manager of student radio station WCKS, led a session called “Getting Your Station Noticed On Campus.” Syrba and station music director Kevin Brennan talked about ways to build enthusiasm for student media in front of a packed room of students and faculty advisers.
 
Assistant Professors Len O’Kelly and James Ford shared with other faculty advisers their experiences bringing student media into curriculum in a session called “Integrating Student Media Into the Classroom: Two Case Studies.” Prof. O’Kelly also delivered a session on the future of college radio called “Fighting Back: Uniting College Radio To Ensure Its Survival,” which was co-authored with Dr. Rob Quicke of William Paterson University in New Jersey.

The Academic Minute is produced by the Association of American Colleges & Universities. It features faculty research and keeps listeners informed about what's new and exciting in the academy.

Robin Spring presented a session entitled Perpetual Handbook: Extending Experiential Learning via the Learning Process Method at the 2018 Lilly Conference in Traverse City, MI. The Perpetual Handbook uses the Learning Process Method to motivate students and encourage deeper learning through reflection while preserving important project processes and ideas. Robin Spring recently published a module entitled 15 Steps to Group Project Success: Using the UDL Model to Elevate Team Collaboration on the College STAR website. College STAR focuses on developing initiatives to help colleges and universities better serve students with learning and attention differences.

School of Communications alumni swept the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce's ATHENA awards, with Jennifer Maxson '94 winning the ATHENA Leadership Award and Lauren McElrath '12 winning the ATHENA Young Professional Award.
